Sovereign Receives 2012 Technology Merit Award for Remediation from Environmental Business Journal

Sovereign received the Environmental Business Journal’s (EBJ's) 2012 Technology Merit Business Achievement Award for Remediation.

The EBJ selected Sovereign for its design and installation of an in-situ ozone sparging system to remediate soil and groundwater impacted with petroleum and chlorinated hydrocarbons at a former chemical storage facility in southern New Jersey. The ozone sparge system covers approximately 10 acres of source zone and includes 416 individually controlled, nested sparge points with an output of 180 pounds per day of ozone, a total of 520 standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) of sparge air, and a soil vapor extraction capacity of 1500 scfm. The system design considerations incorporated site geology, hydrogeology, contaminants, worker safety, system flexibility, green and sustainable remediation, and present/future infrastructure.

“The in-situ ozone sparging system has delivered huge results over a short time frame. We’re collecting mass at an incredible rate,” noted Kevin Wheeler, PG, LSRP, the senior hydrogeologist for the site. Mr. Wheeler and Jorge Montoy, the site’s project engineer, plan to present their findings to the academic community throughout 2013.

The 2012 EBJ awards will be presented at a special ceremony at the Environmental Industry Summit XI in Coronado, California on March 6-8, 2013. For more information regarding the event, visit http://ebionline.org. For more information about the remediation, please see the project page.
