Radiological and Chemical Disposal Sites, Cornell University

Sovereign provided environmental remediation, radiological services, and regulatory interface for the closure of a radiological disposal site (RDS) and a chemical disposal site (CDS) in upstate NY. Sovereign performed the design/build of the RDS Groundwater Interim Remedial Measure and CDS groundwater treatment plant (GWTP) modifications and upgrades for the treatment of groundwater emanating from a former low-level radioactive landfill and a former chemical landfill, as well as oversight of the design and installation of a slurry wall/grout curtain and final remedy cap to meet NYCRR Parts 360 & 380. Sovereign enacted remedial investigation activities such as sampling, groundwater/soil impact investigation, feasibility studies, remedial action planning, public involvement, radiological services, remediation system installation, GWTP operation & maintenance, and system optimization.

As Engineer of Record, Sovereign provided radiological expertise, interacted regularly with the NYSDEC, and prepared and received a NYCRR Part 380 discharge permit for treated groundwater containing radiological constituents, which was the first Part 380 permit issued by NYSDEC.
